Oregon Connections Academy Students Explore CTE Opportunities

January 29, 2019

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon Connections Academy students got a look at careers in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) with a field trip to the Academic Achievement Center in Eugene.

Career Technical Education (CTE) business leaders are struggling to hire qualified employees, so teachers are pressing the importance of early education, preparing students for careers in technical fields.

During the field trip, online elementary students got a hands-on education in STEAM, giving them a chance to develop an interest in those fields early in life.

“We have a real passion to help students align with pathways of interest to them,” said Summer Highfill, CTE Business Instructor with Oregon Connections Academy. “So if students are able to explore those opportunities in K through eight, then by the time they get to high school, they have a little bit more guided idea of what they’re interested in.”

The online school teaches kids from kindergarten through 12th grade.
