PORTLAND, Ore. -- A violin prodigy from Portland will give her biggest performance Friday night at Portland State.

Hanami Froom is only 10 but she’ll share the stage at Lincoln Hall with some of the city’s finest musicians.

“I get scared right before I begin,” she said at a recent rehearsal. "But once I hear the music, I forget about the hundreds of people in the audience.”

Hanami is one of nine students to win the Young Artists Debut competition sponsored by MetroArts.

Their talents will be showcased with the MetroArts orchestra at an April 1st performance.

“She seemed to be born with the composure it takes,” Hanami's dad Rob Froom told KGW. "She’s been playing since she was two.”

“I love classical music,” added Hanami, ”I don’t listen to anything else.”

She manages her practice and school time because her classes are taken online through Oregon Virtual Academy.

“I study 5 to 6 hours a day and it can be when I want,” she explained. "Then I can practice violin for at least two hours.”

“She’s already amazed us,” added her Dad. "We’re just waiting to see where the music takes her next.”
