Students enjoy loop hike around Coffenbury Lake

WARRENTON — With the new school year underway, Oregon Connections Academy kicked off a new series of “Field Trip Fridays” across the state for its virtual school students. On Oct. 5, a group of North Coast parents, students and teachers, along with some from other parts of Oregon, gathered at Coffenbury Lake in Fort Stevens State Park for a fun and educational 2.4-mile loop hike around the lake.

Students observed frogs and several duck species, including Buffleheads, known for being the smallest diving duck in North America. The group also saw signs of elk, and identified various plant species growing in the forest along the trail such as sword fern, salal, Sitka spruce. The highlight of the day was discovering a king bolete mushroom which was around a foot long.
