PORTLAND, Ore. — We celebrate this year’s graduating class, but Kaycee Asher from Salem and Emerson Chase from Beavercreek studied at the same school from the comfort of home.
They are graduates from Oregon Connections Academy, where students take classes online
Asher said she enrolled in 2016 because she struggled in the traditional school environment and needed and wanted a better learning environment.
“I was able to work step by step instead of worrying about whether I was going to get behind,” she said.
Chase enrolled in 2012 and said the school has taught him self-reliance and time management.
“Managing your time and being self-reliant on your own work, I always thought that was the best thing this school has taught me, and different from a bricks and mortar school,” he said.
They weren’t isolated from other students, however. They went on more than 200 field trips, had a prom and even met their teachers.
