The Results Are In!
Thank you to the families who responded to our annual survey and shared their virtual public school experience. Your responses will help us inform state policymakers about Oregon’s virtual public schools and the families who utilize them. The survey results offered important information about the reasons why families utilize this valuable public school option and why it’s working for them.
We learned that families choose full-time virtual public schools for various reasons, including the quality of the curriculum, academic and health concerns related to COVID-19, negative socialization in traditional schools, including bullying or inappropriate peer behavior. Here are some of the findings:
49% of respondents said they enrolled their child because of the quality of the curriculum
37% enrolled their child due to academic and health concerns related to COVID-19
32% enrolled their child because he/she experienced bullying at school
22% enrolled their child because he/she was falling behind academically in a traditional school
Although COVID-19 was very disruptive for all school-age children, more than 90% of families indicated that their child’s full-time virtual public school continued without disruption and an additional 73% who enrolled their child due to the pandemic, plan to re-enroll them in a full-time virtual public school during the 2021/22 school year.
Thanks again to those families who responded to our survey. This information will help inform the conversation around full-time virtual public schools in our state. We look forward to working with you in the year ahead to advocate for our schools.
Enjoy the rest of the summer! We’ll be in touch in September!
