2023 Legislative Session, National Schools Choice Week and More

2023 Legislative Session Kicks Off
After last week’s swearing-in ceremonies for Governor Kotek and new legislators, lawmakers met this week to officially convene the 2023 Legislative Session. Several bills have been introduced to raise or remove the 3 percent enrollment cap to make virtual public schools available to more Oregon families. We will keep you informed on how you can advocate for these bills.

National School Choice Week January 22-29
Next week is National School Choice Week, an opportunity for families across Oregon to celebrate their education choice. Thousands of Oregon parents have chosen a virtual public school option for their children. We urge you to celebrate your school choice by submitting a letter to the editor of your local newspaper or recording a short video about why a virtual public school is the right fit to your family. Share your video on your Facebook or Twitter channels and tag the Oregon Virtual Public Schools Alliance.

Capitol Day is Returning In-Person
Save the date for our 15th Annual Virtual Schools Capitol Day on March 14. We’re excited to return to an in-person event after hosting a virtual event for the last two years. Join us in Salem to meet other virtual public school families, talk to legislators about your education choice and show your support for virtual public education. Due to construction at the Capitol, we encourage you to schedule meetings with your legislators ahead of time. Capitol Day activities will wrap up by 1pm so you can schedule your meetings any time after that. Due to redistricting and significant turnover in the legislature, you may have a new Senator or Representative. Click here to find out who represents you in Salem.

Thank you for all you do to support our schools. I look forward to working with you in 2023.

Sincerely,

Tricia F. Powell
President
